Where does the text come from?

Many DjVu books carry a hidden text layer under the scanned pages: the text that was recognised when the book was scanned. It's what lets you search a DjVu book and copy text from it. This converter saves that text layer as a plain .txt file.

Because the text was recognised by software, it can contain mistakes, especially in old scans, formulas and tables. Line breaks follow the printed page. Some DjVu files have no text layer at all; their pages are only pictures, and this tool will tell you so.

To keep the pages as they look, use the DjVu to PDF converter: the PDF keeps the same searchable text. To read the book, open it in our free online DjVu viewer.

DjVu to TXT: questions and answers

Yes. There's no sign-up, watermark or limit, because the conversion runs on your own device instead of our servers.

No. The converter runs in your browser, so your books never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.

Some DjVu files hold only pictures of the pages, without a text layer. There's no text to extract from them; that would need OCR (text recognition), which this tool doesn't do. You can check in our online DjVu viewer: if search finds nothing, the book has no text.

Yes. The text is saved as UTF-8, which holds every script. If an old program shows strange characters, open the file in a recent app or choose UTF-8 when opening it.

The text layer was made by text recognition software when the book was scanned, and the converter saves it exactly as it is. Old or poor scans, formulas and tables often have mistakes.

With Page numbers, a line like --- 12 --- marks where each page starts, so you can find a quote in the book. Choose None for one continuous text.

Open this page in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, drop your DjVu file on it and click Download TXT. There's nothing to install, and it works the same way on Linux and Chromebook.

Convert the book to TXT, then open the text file in Word or Google Docs and save it as a document. The text comes without the page layout and pictures.

Yes: this converter works in Safari on iPhone. To copy a passage while reading, see how to copy text from DjVu on iPhone.
