Questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. Every book here is in the public domain: free to read, download and share. No sign-up.
- Where do these books come from?
- They're scans of original printed editions that Wikisource volunteers uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and proofread. We choose the books, write about each one and open the scan in our reader; the file itself loads from Wikimedia's servers.
- Why are the Russian classics in old translations?
- Translations stay in copyright for decades. These classic translations, many by Constance Garnett, are old enough to be in the public domain, and they're the versions generations of readers first met.
- Can I save a book as a PDF?
- Yes: the reader has a Convert to PDF button, and for your own DjVu files there's the DjVu to PDF converter.
