Why use this DjVu compressor

No upload

Your books never leave your device. Nothing is sent to a server or stored anywhere.

Much smaller files

Scans made at very high resolution or saved as full-colour photos often shrink to a fraction of their size.

Still searchable

The hidden text layer is kept on every page, so you can still search the book and copy text from it.

Contents kept

Bookmarks and the table of contents stay, pointing to the same pages.

Works on any device

Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android: all you need is a recent browser.

Free, no limits

No sign-up, no watermark, no ads, and no limit on file size or number of books.

How does DjVu compression work?

Some DjVu books are much larger than they need to be: pages scanned at 600 dpi or more, or plain text pages saved as full-colour photos. On a screen, 300 dpi is plenty for text.

This tool draws each page again and encodes it the way DjVu was made for: text pages in black and white at 300 dpi, pages with pictures or colour as pictures at 150 dpi (200 dpi with Better pictures). A page that wouldn't come out clearly smaller is kept exactly as it was, so books that are already compact stay as they are.

To read the smaller book, open it in our free online DjVu viewer. To keep only some pages, use Split DjVu.

Compress DjVu: questions and answers

Yes. There's no sign-up, watermark or limit, because the compression runs on your own device instead of our servers.

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your books never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded.

It depends on how it was scanned. Books scanned at very high resolution or saved in full colour often get several times smaller; books that are already compact barely change, and the tool tells you so.

Text stays at 300 dpi, which reads well on any screen and prints well. Grey and colour pages of plain text become black and white, as most DjVu books are. Pictures are kept at 150 dpi, or 200 dpi with Better pictures.

Yes. Each page keeps its hidden text layer, so you can still search the smaller file and copy text from it. Bookmarks and the table of contents are kept too.

It was already encoded efficiently, usually in black and white at a normal resolution. There's nothing to remove without hurting the pages, so the tool keeps them as they were.

Open this page in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, drop your DjVu file on it and wait for it to finish. There's nothing to install.
